- Probably my most significant difficulty with the local lingo is getting my tongue around the odd combinations of consonants. For example, hleb (bread), Hrvatski (Croatian), zdravo (hello), hvala (thanks)
- One of the local tv stations is running a local version of Big Brother called Farma, where the contestants live on a farm with all the associated tasks. Apart from the setting, some obvious differences to ours is that there is advertising everywhere inside the house. For example, the tablecloth has a big logo on it, and the contestants wear sweatshirts & caps with sponsor logos on it. The common theme is that is broadcast about 18 hours a day!!!
- School hours are quite different here, with the different years going in shifts. Early shift is for the senior years (which is contrary to recent science papers indicating teenagers function better later in the day than earlier), while the junior years go later. For example, Anastasija, who is 8 (I think) starts school at ~1pm, and finishes near 6pm. Certainly a more efficient use of buildings, meaning you only need 1 school to cover primary & high school, rather than 2 buildings used for half a day!
- Combining a couple of earlier entries (lack of proper cold drinks, and low overnight temperatures), I have taken to just leaving the drinks outside at night. They get just as cold!!
- This is a photo of some of the meat available in the local supermarket freezer. Yes, it is what is pictured on the cover!

One of the high schools here has staggered hours - the year 11 & 12 start at 7:30 and finish just after lunch. Apparently this is because of space limitations. The interesting thing is that some of them find it quite hard with afternoon exams in the HSC.
